With the Cleadon Village Atlas project now drawing to a close, we are preparing to mark the event by holding a village celebration on Saturday 8th November at Cleadon Village C of E Academy on Boldon Lane, 1- 4pm on Saturday 8th November and we would love to welcome you along.
Cleadon’s war memorial is one of the few in the country to honour not just those who died but also all those who served, so it seemed a fitting tribute to bring people together in this celebration of village life by focusing on the camaraderie of the First World War.
The event will include displays on the Village Atlas findings, covering the history, archaeology, geology and ecology of the area, as well as ‘hands-on’ activities for all the family. The Time Bandits, a specialist re-enactment team, will put Cleadon’s newest recruits through their paces with army drill sessions, a call to go ‘over the top’ and field dressing station. There will also be a display of weapons – including a machine gun position – field clothing, trench art and more items from the home front. There may also be the chance for today’s kids to experience the strict discipline of an Edwardian classroom!
This will be followed on Sunday 9th with a special service at War Memorial, after usual church services, during which small crosses and wreaths will be laid.
