CBA North’s Chair’s Message for 2018

Dear Members,

Happy New Year for 2018!

As I write this New Year message, 2017 draws to a close and we can reflect positively on another busy year in our region. We’ve seen the Lake District become a World Heritage Site, and Hadrian’s Wall celebrate 30 years as one. We’ve seen some exciting discoveries across our region, from the Roman bath house at Carlisle and civil settlement at Benwell to the discovery of the early Christian church on Lindisfarne. We’ve seen any number of projects by the Heritage Lottery Fund including the opening of The Sill National Landscape Discovery Centre as well as exciting new discoveries at the long established excavations at Vindolanda. We’ve also seen our own highly successful Community Archaeology Conference which we’re keen to build on throughout the coming year.

A look at our Events calendar promises another busy year in 2018 and the award of funding to develop a Community Archaeology Project across our 30 year old World Heritage Site just one high profile highlight, with another successful Landscape Partnership Scheme in Redesdale beginning in January, with Durham University’s exciting Belief in the North East project and with the completion of the latest iterations of the North East and North West Regional Research Frameworks.

We continue to have a strong membership of over 200 with seven local archaeological groups representing a further 700. Our social media presence also continues to be strong and stable with 1384 Twitter followers. We have seen a number of changes on our committee over the past year with my own tenure as Chair beginning and I wish to thank all those who have finished their term of office for their work on behalf of you, our members, with particular thanks to Richard Forster for his time as chair, steering CBA North through a tricky course as we continue to adapt to changing circumstances.

As ever we continue to look at and develop what we provide to you as a member of a regional archaeological group covering a large and diverse an area as we do. We have sent you a range of information, as well as held a number of events, through 2017, and look to continue providing this service in 2018. We are fortunate to have so many active local groups in our region, providing a pool of shared knowledge, skills and experience and we will continue to support these groups wherever possible.

It is, however, an uncertain time for archaeology, with the effect of funding cuts continuing to stretch our Local Authority archaeological services. Where some may see opportunity arising from the UK’s withdrawal from the European Union, we face some very serious challenges including to our countryside which is such a distinctive part of our region, with pressures on our upland landscapes from the need to plant ever more trees and from productive farmland to produce more food for our domestic and overseas markets. In these interesting times we also face challenges to the principles of our planning system which is the bedrock of our heritage protection and from the challenges to build more homes and better infrastructure, we need strong, informed advice independent of those which drive growth in our towns, cities and countryside to ensure we maintain the historic character of our region as we move forward with the times.

On behalf of our committee I would like to thank you for your continued support for CBA North and sincerely hope that you will continue to support our work, and that others will join and to increasingly be involved in our activities. Your views as members are not only important to us but shape the direction of the work we do. We encourage your feedback through our meetings, email and social media and through our committee members.

Wishing you a very Happy New Year and a Prosperous 2018

Chris Jones
